Boosting Market Access: FOCUS-IFAD Nagaland Distributes 23 Reefer Trucks to Farmers’ Organizations
In a significant move to enhance market channels for agricultural produce in Nagaland, Agriculture Advisor Mr. Mhathung Yanthan flagged off 23 reefer trucks (refrigerated vehicles) at the Civil Secretariat ground, Kohima. Sponsored by FOCUS-IFAD Nagaland, these vehicles—branded as “Rural Harvest on Wheels” and “Bridging Farms to Markets”—were distributed to 16 Farmers Producer Organizations (FPOs) and seven other organizations to facilitate the transportation of farm produce to the market.
Expressing his appreciation for the initiative, Mr. Yanthan commended the FOCUS-IFAD team for their efforts, describing the distribution of the vehicles as a remarkable achievement. He emphasized that this initiative stands as one of the best developments for the people of Nagaland. Reflecting on the six-year implementation period of the FOCUS-IFAD project across 608 villages, Mr. Yanthan highlighted the numerous benefits extended to farmers.
“These vehicles will now be deployed across the state, ensuring that fresh vegetables and fruits reach the market efficiently,” he stated. He also underscored that while the facility is a great asset, it comes with responsibility. Urging beneficiaries to operate the vehicles efficiently and collectively, he stressed that they should not be used for individual gain but for the benefit of the entire farming community.
“Now, you are the link between farmers and the market,” Mr. Yanthan said, calling upon the FPOs to work together in transforming the agricultural market scenario and achieving economic independence through the facility provided by the department.
Supporting the message, Mr. Shanavas C, IAS, Commissioner & Secretary to the Government of Nagaland and State Project Director, FOCUS-Nagaland, encouraged the beneficiaries to utilize the vehicles effectively for their intended purpose.
The program concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Mr. Wezope Kenye, IAS, Agriculture Production Commissioner & Mission Director, FOCUS-Nagaland.
